Movie Review – The Gentlemen

We’re obviously early in, but I already have my favorite film of 2020 thus far.

I LOVE a character driven story, and Guy Ritchie is a filmmaker that really shines when he does these kinds of films.
‘Lock, Stock, and Two Smoking Barrels’, ‘Snatch’, Rocknrolla’…and now ‘The Gentlemen’.

This was the best time I’ve had in a theater in quite a long time.
Hugh Grant, in my opinion, delivers the performance of his career here playing a slimy photographic journalist who’s attempting to blackmail drug kingpin Matthew McConaughey through his consigliere played by Charlie Hunnam.

In typical Ritchie fashion, the film’s characters are well fleshed out, the comedy hits perfectly, the tension builds flawlessly, and just when you think you’ve got it all figured out….you don’t.

One of the highlights of the film is Colin Farrell as ‘Coach’ and his band of wayward youths who’ve named themselves ‘The Toddlers’ in their Youtube videos that bizarrely feature them rapping along with all their crimes as they attempt to go viral.

There is no better way to spend your movie going cash than this film.

It’s great to see Ritchie back making the kind of film he makes best, and this hits home even more in the moment as news just broke that he’s signed on for ‘Aladdin 2’.

The big budget paychecks are nice too, I guess.
