Movie Review – The Gentlemen

We're obviously early in, but I already have my favorite film of 2020 thus far. I LOVE a character driven story, and Guy Ritchie is a filmmaker that really shines when he does these kinds of films.'Lock,...

Movie Review – Gretel & Hansel

If you go to Rotten Tomatoes, you’ll see the critics have this film at 60% and the audience has it at 21%.

In this case, I think the critics are a bit too high, and the audience dramatically too low.

I’d put this film at say…55%.

Now that said, I understand why the audience was angry.
They wanted a horror film and this is not a standard horror film.
This is like a Kubrickian dream married with 2016’s Robert Eggers film ‘The Witch’.
It’s more psychological and art house than standard horror.

So if that’s what you were thinking you’re going to get, you will not be happy with what’s delivered.

I actually enjoyed the film quite a bit until the sloppily rushed third act. This is where it went from an incredibly interesting revision of the classic ‘Hansel and Gretel’ tale to a film where the director clearly didn’t know how to wrap up the story in as interesting a way as he set the table.

I don’t hate this film, but I don’t recommend you go spend your money on it either.
It started with tons of promise and tripped at the finish line.
