We're obviously early in, but I already have my favorite film of 2020 thus far. I LOVE a character driven story, and Guy Ritchie is a filmmaker that really shines when he does these kinds of films.'Lock,...

Movie Review – Richard Jewell

by | Jan 9, 2020 | Movie Reviews

I was mostly bummed out while watching ‘Richard Jewell’ tonight because it reminded me that I was 25 when the Centennial Park Bombing happened, and yet it seems like yesterday.

It went down while the Oklahoma City bombing was still fresh in our minds, and Islamic Terror wouldn’t be fully realized in America for another five years.
Remember those good old days?

These were the days when white men committed most of the acts of terror on American soil.

Oh wait…that’s still accurate now, isn’t it?

If you’ve allowed my ‘political’ commentary to affect how you view my review of ‘Richard Jewell’, then you’re most likely no different than the people who stayed away from seeing this fantastic film in theaters because it’s director, Clint Eastwood, is a staunch Republican, and because you didn’t like the way you heard Olivia Wilde’s character behaves in it.

Or maybe you just didn’t care about this story, as Allison has posited to me when we discussed it’s failure at the box office.

This past Sunday alone – and by that I mean by JUST that day’s totals – ‘The Rise Of Skywalker’ made more than ‘Richard Jewell’ has made during it’s entire 26 days in theaters.
And ‘Richard Jewell’ is a vastly superior film.
In every measurable way.
Well, except it didn’t have space horses.

Paul Walter Hauser is fantastic as Jewell.
Kathy Bates is amazing as his mother ‘Bobbi’.
Sam Rockwell is motherfuckin’ Sam Rockwell.

But hey, this film was directed by a Republican asshole, and it featured Olivia Wilde playing a reporter that had sex with a man to get a scoop in some patriarchal wet dream come to life even though it was her call, and so I guess based on Twitter we were mad at it, and it could go fuck itself.

OR…Scorcese is right and we don’t care about anything that isn’t a ‘Theme Park’ film anymore.

Either way, ‘Richard Jewell’ deserved better, in my opinion.

So I eventually landed on this podcast today. It's the story of the disappearance and clear murder of Kristin Smart in 1996. Now, it's rather infuriating because it's abundantly clear who killed her, but...

This was JUST brought to my attention last night, but you may have seen it before. Imagine a town so bereft of anything culturally relevant, that a Dunkin' DoNITS being temporarily closed could cause this...
