We're obviously early in, but I already have my favorite film of 2020 thus far. I LOVE a character driven story, and Guy Ritchie is a filmmaker that really shines when he does these kinds of films.'Lock,...

No, You Can’t Air These Shows in Their Original Form Today

The idea of performing episodes of Norman Lear’s shows like ‘All In The Family’ emanated from people saying “You could NEVER air those shows today!”.

Jimmy Kimmel said that he was out to prove that to be untrue.

In the last year, two different nights of these recreations have been done, and on each night something from the original versions was omitted.

The first was the use of the ‘N Word’ from an episode of ‘The Jeffersons’.

Now, the argument was made that it was decided to omit that word because it’s just not something that needs to be said on television anymore. While I felt that the context in which it was said in the original episode drove directly to the heart of how George viewed Tom and Helen’s interracial marriage, I understood the call.

However, it illustrated that ‘No’ you couldn’t air those shows…in those forms…today.

Last night was worse.

During the recreation of one of my favorite episodes of ‘All In The Family’, and in it’s most pivotal moment, the word ‘goddamn’ was changed to ‘rotten damn’.

For those who don’t remember, this episode dealt with Mike’s friend who was a Vietnam draft dodger that went to live in Canada, but had snuck back into the U.S. for Christmas, being at the Bunker’s house when Archie is having his friend Pinky over for Christmas dinner, who lost his only son in the war.

“I DON’T WANNA HEAR ABOUT THAT GODDAMN WAR NO MORE!!” was a powerful line in a gut-wrenching moment on network television in 1976…that apparently couldn’t be aired to the delicate masses of 2019.

So ultimately…what’s the point of this exercise?

They’ve only succeeded in proving the masses correct – you cannot air these episodes in their original forms on prime time television these days.

So I eventually landed on this podcast today. It's the story of the disappearance and clear murder of Kristin Smart in 1996. Now, it's rather infuriating because it's abundantly clear who killed her, but...
