Anuddercast Movie Review – Jojo Rabbit

After we left the film I said “Imagine knowing that you were about to pitch a film where Adolf Hitler was an imaginary friend to a member of the Hitler Youth smack dab in the middle of 2019 outrage culture.” From watching Taika Watiti’s personality for a while now, I’m gonna assume he couldn’t wait to see the looks on the faces of the studio execs.

Do you know what a tightrope act you have to pull off when you present this particular subject matter, and yet still figure out how to make it funny, and tragic, and poignant all at once?

Well, it’s the tightrope act that Taika delivered.

‘Jojo Rabbit’ is the story of a young boy caught up in the frenzy of the Hitler Youth in Nazi Germany – a young man so enthralled with The Fuhrer that he has his posters on his wall, and keeps him around as an imaginary friend, only to discover that his mother is a Jewish sympathizer that’s hiding a young Jewish girl in the attic of their home.

I don’t quite know how to categorize what Watiti pulled off here. At times it’s reminiscent of the ways in which Mel Brooks would lampoon the darkest chapters of our history, but yet Brooks never dug out spaces that made it soul crushing in between the laughs, as Taika does.

At times it feels like a coming of age film, except none that I recall dealt with the internal conflict of thinking you should kill the girl you had a crush on for the ‘greater good’.

In the end, whatever this is…I think is one of the best films I’ve seen this year.

“FUCK OFF, HITLER!”
