Kevin Smith Reboot of ‘Masters of the Universe: Revelation’ Coming to Netflix

Because everything from our past needs to be done again it appears Kevin Smith will be bringing back ‘He-Man and the Masters of the Universe’ on Netflix.

From the BBC:

“This is the Masters of the Universe story you always wanted to see as a kid!” Smith told the audience at the annual Power-Con convention in California at the weekend.

The series premise revolved around the conflict between heroic He-Man aka “the most powerful man in the universe” and the evil sorcerer Skeletor on the planet Eternia.

“I’m Eternia-ly grateful to Mattel TV and Netflix for entrusting me with not only the secrets of Grayskull, but also their entire Universe,” Smith added.

The new series, Masters of the Universe: Revelation, will apparently pick up where the original animated series left off and will use Japanese anime-style animation.

My question is does this really need to happen?

I mean, I’m all for Kevin Smith making a killing by bringing back an old cartoon and breathing new life into it, but it’s kind of ridiculous to pretend the was anything other than a long toy commercial. Most of the cartoons, like GI Joe, Transformers, and Care Bears were only on the air to sell toys to kids. There weren’t any storylines that were interesting at all, it was only about selling a product to children.

This reminds me of complaints I heard when Transformers came out about how the story sucked and it was only an exercise in special effects. I would ask people if they ever watched any of the original Transformer cartoons because they absolutely sucked. The stories were weak as hell, but little kids loved them because they could go buy the toys. Even the toys were garbage because most of them would break after only a few days.

Now, I don’t want to be a killjoy on this and I’ll admit that having Kevin Smith involved will motivate me to check out the new He-Man when it’s released on Netflix. I hope it’s good, I really do, but I think he’s gonna need to develop an entirely new approach to the storyline because the original cartoon was garbage.

Kevin Smith will be the showrunner for the He-Man reboot ‘Masters of the Universe: Revelation’, and he’ll be a producer along with Rob David from Mattel Television. No word yet as to when the series will be ready for Netflix.
