Go Ahead, Call Me Fredo One More Time!

All day I'm seeing people saying that 'Fredo' isn't the 'N Word' for Italians. I disagree. Sure, to the rest of society, and in the big picture...no, it's not the N Word. But to Italians? I said it before...

Again and Again and Again and Again…

Again and Again and Again and Again…

Kevin Smith suggested that everyone do something creative today in honor of those who lost their lives in the mass shootings over this last week. Well, I don't much feel like drawing because I'm...

Weezer – ‘The Teal Album’

by | Jan 24, 2019 | Music | 0 comments

The Internet was all ‘a flutter’ today, as they say, because Weezer dropped an entire album of cover songs from the ’60s through the ’90s.

All of the local radio station pages that I follow on Facebook were posting about this. Friends were posting about this. This was apparently a very big deal.

And these aren’t like the old days where yours truly would go hit The Pirate Bay and illegally download the album like some sort of new age bootlegger.
No, sir! These days, a gentleman pays a nominal fee a month and is able to stream all the music, from all the bands he wants – even ones he doesn’t particularly care for like Weezer – and samples their wares with some level of a “no harm, no foul” mentality!

Remember back in the days of ‘Sam Goody’ and ‘Wall To Wall Sound’ when you’d drop your hard earned cash on a band’s new album, only to discover that other than that one song that you loved after seeing it’s ‘World Premiere’ video on MTV, that the entire rest of the album sucked?

Remind yourself about that the next time you find yourself posting that meme that’s all over Facebook featuring a pen and a cassette tape while laughing about how “Today’s kids will never know the connection between these two things!”
Yeah, LOL at them, amirite? They only have every album ever made in their pocket, and at their disposal on a whim!
Trying to correct a warbly analog tape gone awry is totally where it’s at!

Anyway…Weezer’s’ “The Teal Album”. Here’s the track listing –

01. Africa (Toto)
02. Everybody Wants to Rule the World (Tears for Fears)
03. Sweet Dreams (Are Made Of This) (The Eurythmics)
04. Take On Me (a-ha)
05. Happy Together (The Turtles)
06. Paranoid (Black Sabbath)
07. Mr. Blue Sky (Electric Light Orchestra)
08. No Scrubs (TLC)
09. Billie Jean (Michael Jackson)
10. Stand By Me (Ben E. King)

After all the excitement, I went through each and every track on this album, and all I could think to myself was “What was the point of this?”.

Essentially, Weezer doesn’t offer a new take on these tracks, instead, they simply attempt to recreate each track as faithfully to the original as possible.
Which leaves me asking “Why wouldn’t I just listen to the original?”.
And to that question, I have no solid answer.

Maybe if you’re a Weezer fan, this is a great day for you.
I mean, who am I to judge if you get excited over lyrics about sweaters, Buddy Holly, and Mary Tyler Moore?
What do I know? I’m almost 50 and listen to metalcore without shame.

I just know I won’t bother with ‘The Teal Album’ again.
